Safety module supports both CIP Safety and ProfiSafe

08 November, 2007

Rexroth claims it is the first supplier to develop a safety module that offers a choice of safety protocols. Its new SIL3 safety function module, which upgrades its standard controllers to safety controllers, acts as a multi-protocol master that supports both CIP Safety on Sercos, and ProfiSafe V2, either via Profibus or Profinet.

Safety and standard I/Os can be run on the same bus. The safety I/O can be local to a controller, or distributed via Sercos III or Profibus/Profinet. Rexroth also offers a SafetyIO converter that allows standard I/Os up to SIL 2 and PL d to be used, thus cutting costs.

The SIL3 module makes safety applications an integral component of control systems, and can be programmed using the same IndraWorks software.

A new safety function available for Rexroth’s IndraDrive family of drives allows safe braking and stopping of suspended loads.
