Three fieldbus group collaborate on wireless specification

01 October, 2007

Three fieldbus organisations - the Profibus User Group, the Fieldbus Foundation and the HART Communication Foundation - have launched a co-operative initiative to standardise wireless technology for the manufacturing and process industries.

The three groups will work together to establish a common, open standard for wireless communications which is compatible with the existing wired versions of their technologies. The aim is to make wireless technology more widely accepted in industrial automation applications.

As part of the initiative, the three groups will develop a specification for a common interface to a wireless gateway. They will base their work on the Hart Foundation’s WirelessHART technology and on the emerging ISA SP100.11a standard. The project will include developing use cases, requirements and specifications for wireless communications with intelligent field devices in control and measurement applications.

The project is an extension of the three organisations’ previous collaboration on the Electronic Device Description Language (EDDL). They have agreed to develop a common set of compliance guidelines to incorporate into their product registration processes, as happened in the EDDL project.
