Security module makes broadband upgrades easy

27 July, 2007

The German embedded security specialist Innominate Security Technologies has developed a device that provides firewall and VPN (virtual private network) security functions for industrial networks. The mGuard Industrial RS module allows remote maintenance and diagnoses to be performed securely via the Internet.

Innominate says the DIN-rail-mounting module, which includes both dial-up and Ethernet connections, will cut costs for manufacturers who upgrade from dial-up links to broadband for remote maintenance. It contains a socket for the optional integration of an analogue modem or ISDN terminal adapter.

"The remote maintenance of industrial machines and plants is currently undergoing a transition phase from traditional modem connections to modern Internet and VPN-based technology," explains Torsten Rössel, Innominate’s director of business development. "Once all machines have been equipped with this device, the costs can be recouped instantly as it will eliminate on-site visits of engineers needed to replace or upgrade the existing modem."

The device’s VPN connections can be activated and deactivated using an electronic switch, with their status indicated via an LED. This eliminates the need to implement these functions in software.
