Rockwell buys German software firm, GEPA

01 May, 2006

Rockwell Automation is buying the German software developer GEPA for an undisclosed sum. GEPA specialises in software that tracks changes in automation, process control and industrial information systems.

Rockwell says that the acquisition fits in with its strategy of expanding its asset management portfolio as part of its FactoryTalk integrated production and performance suite.

GEPA, based in Landau, has been selling its VersionWorks for Automation software, mainly to European customers, for almost a decade. The software provides automatic backups from controllers and other industrial devices, and documents changes needed for regulatory compliance. The software also can also help to recover data quickly and cost-effectively following a disaster.

GEPA`s customers include ABB, BASF, BMW, CocaCola, Daimler-Chrysler, Ford, Heathrow Airport, Nestlé, Siemens and Volkswagen.

"Asset and change management are critical, especially in highly regulated industries where secure, well-documented processes are required," says Kevin Roach, vice-president of Rockwell Software. "Incorporating GEPA technology into our FactoryTalk asset management production discipline, enables us to provide customers with comprehensive diagnostics, calibration and real-time monitoring of their production environment, easing regulatory compliance and improving plant asset utilisation."
