Control Techniques is working with the Dutch firm Nyquist to develop a new generation of motion control systems for OEMs, based on an open PC-based architecture. The systems will combine CT`s digital servo controls with Nyquist`s open motion control technology and high-speed "Firewire" communications.

The agreement is a latest in a series of deals in which CT is supplying its SLM (Servo Loop Motor) technology, originally developed for its own CNC applications, for use by other companies. It has already formed partnerships with two OEMs in Italy, with Trio in the UK and, most recently with Delta Tau in the US.

SLM links motion controllers digitally to servo drives and "intelligent" motors. It provides extremely high positioning resolution - 8.3 million steps per revolution for velocity loops - with substantial improvements in dynamic response, control bandwidth and torque variation. According to CT, it can halve interconnections and cabling compared to conventional servo systems.

Nyquist`s NYCe motion controllers use PC standards such as Windows NT, Ethernet and Firewire to create a robust, open platform that OEMs can adapt to their needs. "Together, we can give a technological lead to OEMs, helping them to improve their competitive edge," says Chiew Fong, vice-president of CT`s servo business.
