Parker Hannifin buys Italian servo-maker, SBC

01 March, 2001

Parker Hannfin has bought the Italian servo drive and motor manufacturer, SBC Elettronica, for an undisclosed amount. Milan-based SBC specialises in digital motion controllers and drives, especially for packaging, assembly, printing and textile manufacturing applications. Its sales are worth around $20m a year.

The cash acquisition gives Parker a lean manufacturing base where it will produce servo motors for the European and North American markets.

"SBC is a great strategic fit for us, with virtually no overlap in products," says Parker president Bob Bond. It provides "an excellent, efficient platform from which we can bundle complete automation solutions for our customers," he adds.

"It fills a void in our own product line," Bond continues, "and provides terrific opportunities for us to extend Parker`s electromechanical offering in the important Italian industrial hub."

SBC produces brushless servo motors in ratings from 0.2-90Nm, and digital drives in ratings from 0.345kW to 33kW. The motors include compact, high-torque, salient-pole machines.

There are two families of drives: one, for voltages from 90-480V AC, offers output currents from 2-67A; the other, for 230V AC operation, spans rated currents from 1.25-15A.

As part of Parker`s Electromechanical division, SBC hopes to increase its share of the Italian market.

In the UK, SBC`s products are sold by Quin Systems of Wokingham and Amir Power Transmission of Hemel Hempstead.
