Motor devourer becomes motor producer

01 July, 2000

Motovario, the Italian power transmission specialist, has transformed itself from being one of Europe`s biggest buyers of electric motors, to being one of the region`s largest motor manufacturers.

Motovario manufactures 2,500 worm gear boxes a day, almost all of which are sold with motors attached. In the past, it bought in more than 100,000 motors a year but, on several occasions, it ran into problems when its motor suppliers could not maintain their deliveries. So it decided to make its own motors.

Following a large investment programme, Motovario is now producing sufficient low-voltage machines not only to meet its own needs, but also to supply external customers. It is manufacturing single-, three-phase and brake motors in ratings from 60W up to 7.5kW (frame size 132).

In addition to its standard range, the company will produce custom motors to meet customers` specific requirements such as torque-speed characteristics for pump or fan applications.

Stephen Horsfall, managing director of Motovario`s UK operation, says that motors now account for about a quarter of his business and 40% of the company`s UK stock. The UK subsidiary was formed when Motovario bought its former UK distributor, Gorton Engineering Products, in 1998. Motovario products now represent around 80% of the UK operation`s business, but it also sells products from other suppliers, including Nema motors made in the US by Leeson.
