Successor is on the way for a VSD stalwart
Published:  29 April, 2015

Danfoss used the recent Hannover Fair to preview a new variable-speed drive that will eventually replace the VLT 2800, which has been on the market for nearly two decades. The new VLT MidiDrive FC280, which is due to go on sale in 2016, has new functions including support for PM motors, integrated safety, and parameter setting via memory modules.

The new drive will support Modbus RTU, with optional support for Profibus, Profinet, Ethernet IP and CANopen. Pluggable control terminals and plug-in power supplies up to 7.5kW will simplify wiring. The new drive also offers integrated brake control, EMC filters and dual-channel STO (safe torque off) functions, eliminating the need for external components.

The memory modules can be used to copy parameter sets from one drive to another, with data loading into the drive automatically when the module is plugged in. The modules can be programmed on a PC or via a dedicated programming device.

The new drive will be mechanically compatible with the VLT 2800, and terminal assignments will be “largely the same”. Danfoss says that it will replace the older drives “gradually”.
