Submersible PM motor can boost outputs by 50%

The US-based flow control specialist Flowserve has announced a submersible electric motor that uses permanent magnet technology. It claims that the pump motor is up to 10% more efficient than asynchronous motors, has a longer operating life, and can boost power outputs by nearly 50%.

The Pleuger PMM6 motor is based on a submersible, three-phase squirrel-cage induction design. It is said to be more efficient than standard induction motors at both full and partial loads, as well as exhibiting lower thermal losses. Energy costs are up to 10% lower.

When used with a variable frequency drive, the motor runs at synchronous speed with no rotor losses, allowing it to drive pumps at their best efficiency points under variable flow conditions.

The 150mm-diameter motor, which has a large air gap, is currently available with power outputs from 5–45kW. Further sizes are planned. Because the motor is available in the same diameter as rival conventional machines, Flowserve says that customers will often be able to cut their energy costs by upgrading to the new design.

“As energy costs continue to rise, the ability of the Flowserve PMM6 motor to deliver an approximate 10% increase in efficiency and extend motor life will produce cost savings for our customers in the water resources and general process industries,” says Bob Hendricks, president of the company’s industrial pump operation.
