Inductive coupler carries IO-Link signals and power through the air

Balluff has developed a contact-less inductive coupler that can transfer energy and IO-Link signals across an air gap of up to 55mm. The bidirectional coupler can be used where fixed wiring of sensors and actuators would be difficult, or subject to wear caused by fatigue – for example, on rotary tables and interchangeable tools.

The coupler can be used to bundle sensor and actuator signals in the field via simple three-wire cables. The signals are transferred transparently via the contact-free connection. When used with an IO-Link master, the coupler can be connected to almost any fieldbus, allowing connected IO-Link devices to be configured or diagnosed remotely.

The coupler’s ability to carry power allows users to switch actuators – such as valve terminals connected via sensor/actuator hubs – on and off independently of any sensors without needing to interrupt the IO-Link connection.

The plug-and-play couplers, in 40 x 40mm housings, and can be replaced easily. M12 connections are provided on the base and on remote devices.
